How Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are treated
Traditionally, you treat most substance use disorders at rehabilitation facilities, which will remove patients from their familiar drug use environment, influences, and triggers. This is also known as residential treatment and allows the patient to focus on recovering from addiction without external distractions entirely.
Nowadays, rehab centers offer both residential and outpatient treatment, where the patient gets to live at home for the duration of the treatment instead of living in the rehab facilities. There are different pros and cons for each type of treatment, and they’re both suited for different addiction cases and patient preferences.
Most SUDs deal with alcohol or drug use that has spiraled out of control and started negatively affecting the victim’s personal relationships, livelihood, and physical health. For teens, the causes of addiction are mostly psychological, such as peer pressure and family history of drug use. Hence, rehab for teens consists of a combination of intense therapy (both individual and group counseling) and medication used to treat SUDs.
What are the steps in treating SUDs?
Detoxification is the first step in treating any substance addiction issue, whether it’s alcohol or drug abuse. Detoxification is the process by which our experts will remove the harmful toxins from the patient’s body. Constant medical and psychiatric attention is required to help the patient deal with any withdrawal symptoms.
A lot of rehab centers require patients to be fully detoxified before admission, while others may incorporate detoxification into their inpatient treatment programs. It is good to contact the rehab center and inquire about this beforehand.
After detoxification, the next steps involve intensive therapy and psychiatric care. There will be individual therapy such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and group counseling sessions. These therapy sessions are designed to help patients discover the deep-rooted psychological causes that led to their substance addiction, help them identify triggers, and develop a healthy response to them.
Why is tackling teen SUDs so important?
SUDs aren’t purely psychological; you can’t just convince yourself out of addiction. Prolonged substance use causes major changes in the brain's chemistry. Because teenagers’ brains are still developing, these chemical changes are far more potent and dangerous.
Due to the chemical changes in the body, SUDs is a chronic illness that doesn’t completely go away, and it is only manageable with the help of rehabilitation treatment. Statistics show that 9 out of 10 people with substance abuse issues, started using before the age of 18. Hence, tackling them early on is the key to a successful recovery.
Substance abuse is rising among teenagers now more than ever, making rehab for teens a vital solution for a growing problem. Clearfork Academy provides a range of individualized, quality treatment programs for troubled teens.
